Ruth Asawa: Citizen of the Universe

Published to accompany the exhibition at Modern Art Oxford, Ruth Asawa: Citizen of the Universe was produced by Thames & Hudson in close conjunction with Modern Art Oxford and the Stavanger Art Museum, Norway. Although less well-known outside North America, the Japanese–American artist Ruth Asawa (1926–2013) is an important modernist artist. This is the first exhibition of her work in a public gallery in Europe and introduces European audiences not only to Asawa’s art – including her incredible signature hanging sculptures in looped and tied wire – but also to her educational beliefs and activism.

Grade was delighted to be asked to create the catalogue of the show in early 2020 and despite the enormous challenges that the curators faced in pulling together such a complex exhibition and catalogue during the pandemic, the creative team and collaborators worked hard over two years to make both the show and the book happen. The exhibition runs in the summer of 2022. It will then transfer to the Stavanger Art Museum from 1 October 2022 to 22 January 2023. Grade has also been appointed to create all the marketing materials and exhibition graphics for the Norway leg of the show.
