Type Directory

Researched and written by Grade’s Peter Dawson, Type Directory contains a vast collection of nearly 1,900 typefaces, spanning 600 years of typeface and design history within its 672 pages. 

With a foreword by acclaimed American type designer Tobias Frere-Jones, the book is organised by type categories: Serif, Sans Serif, Display and Script, subcategorised further by style. The book features profiles on a number of eminent type designers and foundries from around the world, alongside examples of their work. Each typeface is presented with upper- and lower-case alphabets, along with numerals, key punctuation marks and symbols. As a source of reference and inspiration to aid comparison in selecting types, all entries feature a short overview of their design and background with striking examples of graphic and typographic design.
